Rio Vista Park

Rio Vista Park is a neat spot on the San Marcos map. There is actually two parts to this park, each accessible on either side of the street. It is located right next to Herbert’s Taco’s (no doubt the best tacos in San Marcos). I usually park next to the colorful bathrooms and walk over the bridge and to the left to explore the park. Lots of people enjoy this park during the day.

There are a couple of different trails you can walk on and sightsee along the river. Once you cross the small bridge, and walk to the left, it branches out into a few short trails. You can also cool off during the summer and take a dip in the clear, cool river. If you have a pup, take him along with you. My friend and I took our pup and he had the time of his life.

The second part of the park is behind Ivar’s river pub. There is rapids on this side and boulders to sit on. Chilling next to the water and listening to the river flow against the rapids is a very peaceful and calming place. My favorite time to go is at night when there’s not many people around and you can enjoy the park to yourself. If you want more information on how to navigate to this spot check out this link here.

John Stokes Park

This nature spot is one that I hold near and dear to me. My friends and I discovered this secluded, secret spot spontaneously while we were adventuring, and it quickly became our weekly hangout. I have countless, irreplaceable memories here. We would all come here after our busy, stressful school days and unwind. We would come here on the weekends and all take turns on the swing, just conversating about whatever came to mind. We would come here and take fun and mysterious pictures in the nature surrounding us.

One of my favorite memories is when my friends and I had a cute little picnic along the river and sat and told each other about our days and our goals in life. Here, life felt so precious and the people we are privileged to spend it with made it all the more enjoyable. We would all forget our worries and jump into the stinging cold river in whatever clothes we had on, because it did not matter what we would do with the uncomfortable stickiness of our garments on our bodies but rather what the moment held.

This local park is surrounded by the river, and when you enter you will see a striking waterfall pouring out into it. Many times I have observed kayakers paddling through, and others chilling and enjoying the cool water. It’s also a fun area to practice yoga or meditation. As you can see, this hangout has many exciting activities to discover. It is one of my favorite spots, and with all the positives it has to offer, I highly recommend it.

Prospect Park- San Marcos

Below is a picturesque view from my recent hike at prospect park. This spot is a common hiking ground for many in the San Marcos area. Whether you’re looking for some good exercise and fresh air or simply want to explore a new location, this spot is perfect! I would suggest closed toed shoes and some comfortable athletic wear to make this trek more enjoyable. I wore some tennis shoes and athletic leggings and found this most fitting.

The park consists of around two miles of trails. One trail leads more into the brush and trees and the other trail leads to a more open field. An interesting part about this hiking location is that there is a large mound of rocks that forms a trail with a higher elevation, when climbing to the top of this trail the view is quite breathtaking. You will be able to see much of San Marcos and the life of the area surrounding this spot. Sunsets are quite astounding paired with this view.

Another neat spot at this location is this chasm that opens about 100 ft. in diameter and a neat box shaped concrete ledge you can sit out on. You can tell many people come through this spot because of the graffiti tagging this ledge. The terrain of the park consists of some rocky, and some smoother areas of trail. The variation makes it perfect for running or biking if you choose. I hope this information gives you a better idea of what to expect!
